Belarus' national sustainable development strategy 2035 will be in the spotlight of the national SDGs forum in January 2019, Belarus National SDG Coordinator, Vice Speaker of the Council of the Republic Marianna Shchetkina said at the meeting of regional groups on SDGs in Brest, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is among those who spearhead the efforts to organize the work towards the Sustainable Development Goals. We also realize that it is very important to build up the work at the regional level, not only in regions but also in districts. We plan to hold the national SDG forum in January 2019 to discuss the national sustainable development strategy 2035, the concept of which is currently being developed. To this end, we should sum up the intermediate results, set the priorities and identify the accelerators of the development of our country,” Marianna Shchetkina said.

The work on the strategy concept is supervised by the Economy Ministry. Now the document is under consideration in the Council of the Republic.

Brest is hosting the first meeting of regional groups on SDGs. The event is attended by representatives of all the Belarusian oblasts and the city of Minsk. Participants have gathered to share working experience, lay out initiatives, and consider approaches to strategic planning for sustainable development at the regional level. “I can name three regions who are leading at this moment. These are Brest Oblast, Mogilev Oblast, and the city of Minsk. We would like to implement the best practices in order to level out the development of all the regions. This is an essential condition for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” Marianna Shchetkina said.

The country is actively developing state programs aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, stressed the UN Resident Coordinator to Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki. “Belarus has succeeded in coordinating the work on the SDGs. Today's meeting is about the work at the local level. We are confident that regional administrations and government agencies play an important role in the process. They outline the priorities and identify the areas where the work needs to be strengthened. The 2030 Agenda seeks to strengthen the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and to benefit all,” she said.

The UN member states passed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015. The Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are a commitment to eradicate poverty, inequality and injustice, prevent climate change. The Agenda 2030 is a comprehensive strategy to improve the quality of life of people, ensure development and consumption without detriment to future generations. All 17 goals are adapted for Belarus as well. The national coordinator for SDGs, the Council for Sustainable Development (which includes representatives from all government agencies), partner and other groups, civil society and international organizations are working on the matter. All the proposals will be reflected in the National Sustainable Development Strategy for the period through 2035. Program documents, legislative acts will also be based on the Agenda 2030.
