Planting of potatoes, vegetables gets underway in Belarus

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – Belarus has started planting potatoes and vegetables, BelTA learned from the Agriculture and Food Ministry.

Spring crops were planted on an area of 735,000 hectares, or 31.1% of the target. Early spring grain and leguminous crops (excluding maize, buckwheat and millet) were planted on an area of 518,700 hectares, which is 84.3% of the plan.

Spring rapeseed was planted on an area of 8,180 hectares, which is 13.3% of the target. Sugar beet was planted on 54,500 hectares (5.8%), maize on 30,300 hectares (2.48%), potatoes on 560 hectares (3.36%), vegetables on 730 hectares (14.5%).

Annual grasses were planted on 84,600 hectares, which is 38.5% of the plan. Flax was sown on the area of 23,000 hectares, which is 46.4% of the plan.  Some 951,100 hectares of land was prepared for sowing early spring crops, which is 40.2% of the target.
