Belarus set to finish harvest season by 20-25 August

17.08.2023 17:08

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – The harvest time in Belarus is expected to be completed by 20-25 August, Nikolai Leshik, the head of the main department of crop production at the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus, told reporters, BelTA has learned.

"Recently, the weather has made adjustments to the work of farmers. At the beginning of the harvest season we had a spell of dry weather and were afraid of a low harvest. Last week, on the contrary, was very rainy. Excessive humidity hampers the pace of work. Thus, the average rate of harvesting was 3.5-4% per day against the standard of 6%. However, in recent days, we have had warm weather and the pace of harvesting has picked up. Now more than 200,000 tonnes of grain are threshed in the fields every day," Nikolai Leshik said.

According to him, the harvest time in the southern regions of Belarus is expected to end by 20 August. In Vitebsk Oblast and Mogilev Oblast the date is around 25 August since these regions are located to the north and had more rain. "The pace of harvesting is on a par with the previous year. Since the harvested area was slightly higher in 2022, the harvest season this year is a little longer," Nikolai Leshik explained.

As of this morning, over 6 million tonnes of grain, including rapeseed, have been threshed. This made up more than 5 million tonnes of grain and leguminous crops and almost 1 million tonnes of oilseeds. In general, 80% of the areas has been harvested, including about 79% planted to grain crops. "The productivity of the fields is slightly lower this year, yet the yield of the grain group is decent and is more than 33 centners /ha. In terms of oilseeds we are approaching the mark of 30 centers/ha," Nikolai Leshik emphasized.

Grodno Oblast is the absolute leader in terms of productivity in the grain group and rapeseed. This region has the best soil and climatic conditions. Nikolai Leshik also noted that Brest Oblast has posted the decent yield of grain crops too. According to him, this is the only region where the yield of the grain field is higher than last year.
