OSTROSHITSKY GORODOK, 8 May (BelTA) - The Belarusian government needs to do its best to prevent war from coming to its land again, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said after laying a wreath at the monument to the tankers and soldiers of the 100th Infantry Division, who stood to the death near Ostroshitsky Gorodok in June 1941, BelTA has learned.
Roman Golovchenko noted that the current young generation does not communicate with the participants of the Great Patriotic War directly. “Therefore, for many of them Victory Day is something festive, including fireworks, banners, parades. Of course, we talk a lot about the suffering of Belarus, including the genocide of the Belarusian people, but it is important to explain that Victory is not just a holiday. It is a very long way consisting of thousands of small victories,” he said. “The most important thing is that each of these victories are victories brought about by every person individually. Each of these people had to make hard choices in their military life, which often involved sacrificing their lives for the sake of their homeland.”
According to the prime minister, it is important to make the younger generation aware of the need to be ready for various situations even in the present time. “The readiness of our ancestors for self-sacrifice, for courage, valor, fortitude and bravery may be required even now. It is not necessarily related to war. Most often it is related to ordinary peaceful life, when each of us has to make a choice in favor of our beloved country and our Fatherland,” Roman Golovchenko said.
The prime minister added that the war and Victory are not just lines in textbooks and books. “These are lessons that need to be known, understood and put into practice. This holds special meaning in this place representing two great historical events. This is a heroic yet short-lived resistance of our troops in the summer of 1941 and the liberation of Belarus in the summer of 1944. These dates are separated by three years, which became a huge test for our people. These three years are marked by numerous victims, destruction of our country,” the prime minister emphasized.
The head of government is convinced that Belarusians have made the right conclusions that the aggressor appeasement policy never yields positive results. “One should always be ready to defend their country, one should anticipate events, while the country authorities should be prepared for any scenario, adequately perceive all the ongoing processes and do everything possible to prevent war from coming to our land again,” he said.
