Work continues at Bernardine convent ruins in Brest

16.09.2026 10:09
In the Brest Fortress, restorers have been working since spring on the conservation of the ruins of the Bernardine convent on the Volyn fortification. Much has been found during this time: artefacts and fragments of historical structures. During earthworks, a basement structure was discovered that falls within the footprint of the men’s monastery building. The territory of the Volyn fortification housed four buildings whose existence is known from documentary materials, including cartographic ones. The complex of the Bernardine women’s and men’s monasteries began to be built in the 17th century. Then a turning point came in the history of Brest - the construction of the Brest Fortress. During the major reconstruction and changes to the topography, the old city was moved to another location. Some structures were adapted for other needs.
