Brest Fortress in focus of new exhibition

01.02.2019 07:02

krepostThe historical exposition headlined as The Chronicle of the Brest Fortress opened in the south-eastern barracks of the citadel on 31 January. It tells about the events in the 180-year history of the Brest Fortress, director of the Brest Fortress memorial complex Grigory Bysyuk told BelTA.

The exposition has been arranged as part of the Belarus-Russia Union State project named “Major repairs, restoration, and commemoration of the Brest Fortress in the Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex in 2018-2020".

"New forms and methods of presentation take visitors to the center of a historical event, take them back in time. Three-dimensional panoramas consisting of widescreen landscapes with all-round visibility, authentic window openings and loopholes in combination with historical figures made in full size, coupled with music and lighting create an immersive effect. Panoramas do not have obstacles. This role is played by reliefs," Grigory Bysyuk said.

The exhibition consists of seven halls. "The first three halls are dedicated to the 100-year period of the history of the Brest Fortress, the other three reflect the defense of the Brest Fortress in 1941. The seventh hall is dedicated to Belarus' liberation from the Nazi invaders and the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. Today's role of the Brest Fortress is to preserve the memory of the people's feat during the Great Patriotic War. People who contributed to the Brest Fortress are described against the historical background," the director said.

The exposition also includes the sections about the construction of the Brest-Litovsk fortress, its modernization, the events of the First World War, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the life of the fortress garrison before the Second World War. "The historical heritage of the Brest Fortress has been made by generations of people who lived here during the time of ancient Brest, medieval Brest-Litovsk, modern Brest. The fortification has gone through all the ordeals of the wars to become a museum - the symbol of Memory and Peace. Keeping the Brest Fortress intact is important for building the spiritual heritage for future generations," Grigory Bysyuk said.
